Story
It started as one of those unplanned mornings where someone casually suggests an idea and suddenly it becomes the plan for the day. We decided to cycle to Hailuoto without overthinking it. After lunch we packed what we needed, checked our bikes, and set off from Oulu with no real pressure except to enjoy the ride. On the way we stopped at a small K market and picked up some chocolate, something simple that somehow always feels like the right choice on longer rides.
The ride toward Riutunkari was steady and relaxed. The distance was long enough to feel it in the legs but not too heavy, especially with the thought of the ferry waiting ahead. We knew we would not ride all the way across the island this time, so we kept the pace comfortable and focused on the experience instead of the distance. When we reached the ferry point, there was a quiet sense of anticipation. The ferry ride itself was calm and unhurried, about thirty minutes across open water, giving us time to just sit, look around, and take it in.
Once we reached Hailuoto, we cycled a few kilometres into the island. The surroundings felt different from the mainland, more open and softer in a way. We stopped along the way, picked some wild berries, and spent time near the beach. There was no rush to move forward. We already knew we would come back again properly next summer and explore the island in full.
Part of the reason for going that day was knowing that this ferry ride might not be around much longer. With the new bridge under construction, this simple crossing will soon be replaced by a direct road. That made the moment feel more meaningful. It was not just another ride, it was something that might soon become a memory.
In the evening around 6.45 we started heading back toward Oulu. The return ride took about two and a half hours. By then the body was tired but in a good way. The kind of tired that comes from doing something worthwhile. It ended up being around sixty kilometres in total, a solid day on the bike, good for both the body and the mind. Nothing complicated, just a spontaneous decision that turned into one of those days you remember for a long time.
