Sailor’s Home Museum, Oulu

On a quiet day in December I visited the Sailor’s Home Museum in Pikisaari near the city centre of Oulu. I went during the winter Christmas opening period. The museum is a small maritime place that shares the story of Oulu sailors their families Pikisaari island and the old Matila House from the 1800s when Oulu was a major seaport city. Entry was free and two friendly elderly staff members welcomed me and guided me through the rooms. They showed short story clips and old photographs of the Sailor’s Home sailors life Pikisaari and old Oulu town. The official site now lists summer opening from 3.6.2026 to 30.8.2026 at 10.00 to 17.00 daily plus Oulu Days opening on 5.9.2026 and 6.9.2026 at 11.00 to 17.00. The visit felt warm quiet and personal like stepping into a small preserved memory of Oulu seafaring life. You can also buy small souvenirs there which is a nice way to support the museum.
